for the Arkansas State University-Beebe Vanguard Senior Academy for Home School Students has begun for the 2016 to 2017 academic year.
“In conversations with home school associations, parents expressed a desire for students to take college level coursework, resulting in an academic transcript,” said Dr. Karla Fisher, chancellor at ASU-Beebe. “This new program will give home school students an advantage in completing some basic college classes, while continuing their home school education.”
Participants of the Vanguard Academy cohort group will receive academic and career counseling, free tutoring at the Learning Center, personal and professional development workshops, use of the Abington Library, exposure to STEM majors and careers, and mentoring and leadership development.
Classes for the Fall 2016 semester will begin August 23 and will be held Tuesdays and Thursdays. Freshman English I and college algebra will be offered during the Fall 2016 semester, and freshman English II and principles of biology with lab will be offered during the Spring 2017 semester. Both semesters will include the Vanguard Experience, which is a college preparatory class.
“We are excited about offering this cohort academy, which will most certainly benefit home school students as they later transition into college,” said Kristine Penix, director of Concurrent Enrollment and Articulated Credit.
Estimated tuition costs are $650 for seven credit hours in the fall semester, and $700 for eight credit hours in the spring semester. Students will be issued a student ID card, which will allow them access to the University Café and use of the Abington Library.
The Vanguard Academy is limited to 20 students; therefore, early registration is advised. Students will need to complete an ASU-Beebe online application for admission located at www.asub.edu. Students must also provide GPA and ACT, COMPASS, or Accuplacer scores, and complete a CEP Enrollment and Policy form.
