The Division of Math & Science is committed to student success by providing educational experiences to foster creative and analytical thinking. Programs and coursework within this division prepare students for direct entry into the workforce or for further academic pursuits.
Emergency Medical Services
Emergency Medical Services (EMS) offers emergency medical technician (EMT) and paramedic level training. Coursework prepares students to challenge the national licensure exam and begin a career in the field of EMS. Career opportunities available to EMS professionals include ambulance services, hospital emergency departments, urgent care and family practice clinics.
Health Information Technology
The Health Information Technology program provides students with knowledge of the duties and responsibilities of health information managers. Through the use of textbooks, applications and simulations, students are given the opportunity to develop the skills required for this field. These skills include International Classification of Diseases Tenth Revision (ICD 10-CM) and Procedure Classification System (ICD 10-PCS), Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) coding, insurance billing, records management, HIPAA regulations and office management. ASU-Beebe offers a technical certificate and a certificate of proficiency for this program.
Life sciences comprise the branches of science that involve the scientific study of living organisms such as microorganisms, plants, animals and human beings. These courses are designed to meet the needs of the general student wishing to secure an understanding of the fundamental biological principles. Students taking life science courses desire to pursue a degree or certificate in health care professions, transfer to four-year institutions offering programs in health science, or have other related interests concerning life science. The courses offered range from a general study of biology to more specialized offerings in microbiology, human anatomy and physiology.
The Department of Mathematics strives to provide a supportive learning environment where students can acquire the analytical and problem solving skills needed in nearly every field of endeavor. The courses offered are designed to prepare students for leading roles in education, science, business, industry and other careers. Students can learn basic skills, earn required math credits for certificate and degree programs, or prepare for transfer to a four-year institution.
Medical Laboratory Technology
The Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT) program prepares students for work in a medical lab under the direction of a pathologist performing procedures in hematology, serology, immunology, chemistry, microbiology, immunohematology and urinalysis. Through the MLT program, students obtain skills in analyzing components of bodily fluids and isolating/identifying microorganisms. The study of blood components will help prepare students to perform pre-transfusion tests and determine immune responses. Students will also learn to develop data that may be used in the diagnosis of a disease and to help evaluate the effectiveness of treatment. The MLT program guides students in performing tests to assist physicians and aid in the prognosis of patients.
Patient Care Technician
The Patient Care Technician program will introduce students to curricula in assistant nursing, EKG/telemetry, phlebotomy, emergency medicine and medical terminology. The program includes face-to-face and online instruction as well as a variety of lab activities for the critical hands-on learning. Students who complete the program will be eligible to test and receive a national certification in patient care technology making them employable as patient care technicians (PCTs). Students who wish to pursue further study may do so with credits earned.
Pharmacy Technician Science
Pharmacy technicians are responsible for the control or distribution of pharmaceuticals in hospital, clinical and retail settings. The Pharmacy Technician program at ASU-Beebe is accredited by the American Society of Health System Pharmacists (ASHP) and Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE). ASU-Beebe offers an associate's degree, a technical certificate and a certificate of proficiency for this program.
Physical science is the study of nonliving matter, energy and the physical properties of the universe. Courses in physical science prepare students for careers in chemistry, geology, engineering and pharmacology. ASU-Beebe offers courses in chemistry, physics, earth science, physical science and other related areas.
The Practical Nursing program is an 11-month program that integrates clinical learning experiences with classroom theory specific to the role of the practical nurse. It offers students the opportunity to develop the knowledge and skills needed to work in various health care settings. Students will build on a rich tradition of committed educational experiences focused on effective communication, critical thinking and clinical reasoning.
The Registered Nursing program is a one-year accelerated program which enables Licensed Practical Nursing (LPN) program graduates and certified paramedics to pursue an Associate of Applied Science and prepare for the registered nurse national certification exam. Applicants to this program are required to have completed 34 hours of prerequisite coursework before matriculation.
The Veterinary Technology program is dedicated to supporting the growth of certified veterinary technicians by providing a solid education that has its basis founded in knowledge, skills, professionalism and ethics. The program is accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) and Committee of Veterinary Technician Education and Activities (CVTEA) and provides hands-on education in veterinary technology operations. Students will develop entry level competencies necessary to obtain employment in veterinary hospitals and industry. Students are eligible to take the Veterinary Technician National Exam (VTNE) after graduation from the program. Students successfully completing the degree and passing the VTNE can be certified in the state of Arkansas.
