The Arkansas State University–Beebe Art Department is proud to present the exhibit “Yard Work: Inspirations Found in Our Own Backyards.”
The art exhibit is located in the England Center Art Gallery. Admission is free and the gallery is open to the public from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday throughout the month of September.
“Yard Work” features four artists who first met one another at the University of Central Arkansas Art Department over a decade ago. Kristen Spickard, Barbara Satterfield, Jeff Young and Deborah Kuster have come together to showcase their artistic responses to nature and backyard experiences.
The artists explore the rich creativity from the everyday landscapes of their own backyards. Each artist approaches the theme through their own unique artistic medium and personal vision.
Spickard uses alternative photography process, such as cyanotype to make copies of the elements of a yard, transforming grass, leaves, and insects into dreamlike impressions of a ‘perfect’ yard.
Satterfield draws inspiration from her expansive yard abounding in creatures and plant life. Her ceramic constructions reflect cycles and growth she has nurtured through the seasons.
Young incorporates charcoal and soil from his own backyard into drawings that consider time, attentiveness, and lessons learned.
Kuster creates handwoven textiles that reflect memories, metaphors, and contexts found within nature.
