ASU-Beebe’s Dr. Brent Bristow Takes Flight with New Band and Album “Motion Carries”
Posted Date: 1/19/24

Dr. Brent Bristow, a professor of music at Arkansas State University-Beebe since 2008, has soared beyond the classroom and into the world of progressive rock with his new band, Emerald City Council, and their debut album, “Motion Carries.” Released on Friday, Jan. 19, the album is a nine-track journey showcasing Bristow’s musical prowess as a saxophonist, keyboardist and songwriter.

“Motion Carries” is a testament to the power of collaboration. Joining Bristow on this musical adventure were fellow ASU-Beebe alum and current adjunct guitar instructor Seth Hankerson, along with a stellar lineup of musicians: vocalist Jake Livgren (nephew of Kansas’ Kerry Livgren), drummer Noah Hungate (son of Toto’s David Hungate), and bassist Jeremy Nichols. Dr. Brandon Goff from Francis Marion University added his masterful touch with additional guitar work. The album includes several guest appearances, including guitar solos from Paul Bielatowicz and Mike Thompson and contributions from actors Jeffery Combs and Steve Rankin. Multi-Grammy and Emmy-winning recording engineer Jamie Tate mixed and mastered the material at the Rukkus Room Studio in Nashville, Tennessee. German artist Thomas Ewerhard provided the cover artwork that perfectly captures the spirit of the music.

Bristow describes the album’s creation as a transformative experience.

“Producing this album pushed me on many levels as a musician and songwriter,” Bristow said. “Everyone who worked on it put their heart and soul into bringing this material to life, which forced me to be better, and I could not be more grateful. While the songs can all stand on their own, I think we are providing a true album experience for those who want to lose themselves in music for an hour.”

“Motion Carries” has garnered industry buzz. Nick Katona, president of Melodic Revolution Records, the label behind the album, said, “Yeah! We have a winner, and you will too in early 2024.”

The album’s first single, “Ice Thinning,” released in December 2023, showcases the band’s technical expertise and melodic sensibilities, leaving listeners eager for more. A lyric video for “Ice Thinning” is available on YouTube at https://youtu.be/KIXz3ou4uV8?si=S3QRHsBAlDEs2oCE

“Motion Carries” is more than just an album; it’s a testament to Bristow’s dedication to music education and sharing his passion with others. He continues to inspire students at ASU-Beebe through his diverse course offerings, including music theory, composition and saxophone performance. He is also an active performer, conductor and clinician, regularly appearing in concerts and recitals throughout North America. He has performing artist endorsements with the Yamaha Corporation of America and Rovner Products.
