The ASU–Beebe Art Department is proud to present the artworks of Courtney Wilson during the month of October. An exhibition reception will be held Thursday, Oct. 2, from noon to 2 p.m.
The art exhibit is in the England Center Art Gallery. Admission is free and the gallery is open to the public from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.
Wilson is a sculptor from Little Rock, Arkansas. Her sculpture aims to connect historical narratives and create conversation around lost community value. By looking to the past and assessing the present, her work questions the political, economic, and social histories forming our communities.
“My sculpture work is a study of personal histories and their modern interpretations. Utilizing terracotta clay, I am exploring how family history can be altered in the lens of a new generation, and the disconnection between memories and the story originally imparted,” Wilson said.
Wilson describes her works as an integration of Renaissance forms and compositions of Biblical figures to elevate the stories of her own familial heroes and memorialize a memory. The artworks are made through a combination of low and high relief, on individual intricate tiles. The images depicted are based on personal family photos and altered to visualize the interpretation of it in contemporary.
“My work seeks to primarily elevate my own matriarchal heroes and start conversations around how we choose to remember those in our own personal lives,” Wilson said.
Wilson earned a bachelor’s degree in fine arts with an emphasis in ceramics from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. She also attended Penland School of Craft in Spruce Pine, North Carolina and Touchstone Center for Crafts in Farmington, Pennsylvania.
