"Life as a Vanguard" series introduces Asia Simmons
Posted Date: 4/10/23

As a freshman, Asia Simmons became active on campus from the start, serving as secretary of the Student Government Association and vice chair of the diversity committee, as well as the faculty diversity and inclusion committee.

When asked why she chose ASU-Beebe, Simmons said, “I have always felt welcome at ASU-Beebe and flooded with love and support from faculty and staff. They really care here.”

Simmons attended high school in Lonoke and was already familiar with the college environment and ASU-Beebe, having participated in the Upward Bound program throughout high school.

Simmons, a criminal justice major, plans a career in forensic psychology as a mental health professional. “I would like to work as a 911 operator to get this experience and one day mentor students at ASU-Beebe like my criminal justice instructor Dr. Phillips,” said Simmons.

Additionally, Simmons said she has a passion for people to be heard, especially those who have lost their voice due to being in prison or those seeking mental health care and has personally been inspired by the quote ‘See a need, fill a need’ from the movie ‘Robots.’”

Simmons said she has also enjoyed the student activities offered on campus, such as hosting a Halloween costume contest and Vanderbilt Melodores concert last fall. She also admitted to being a chess junkie, playing throughout high school and competing in her senior year.

When asked to share something others may not know about her, Simmons said, “I am convinced I could be a professional mind profiler – I have watched every season of criminal minds.”

Simmons offered the following advice: “I would tell future students to seek ways to be involved on campus even if you don’t live here. There are so many opportunities for students to be seen and heard and the administration really cares about students. I see it. I’ve experienced it.”

Life as a Vanguard is a social media series produced by the ASUB Office of Marketing and Public Relations. These are ‘get to know’ articles of interest about students, faculty and staff within the Vanguard campus community.
