Life as a Vanguard Introduces Jeffrey Phillips
Posted Date: 4/1/21

Jeffrey Phillips, of Wilburn, is a sophomore on the Heber Springs campus. He is taking courses toward an Associate of Science in Education degree.

“After I graduate, I plan to pursue a degree in Fisheries and Wildlife Sciences toward a career as a regional educator in the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission. I want to share my knowledge and experience of nature and Arkansas' wildlife with other people and do what I enjoy,” said Jeffrey.

“I have enjoyed all of my classes but my favorite classes would be Freshman English and Oral Communications. They are interesting and the professors care that students do well in the class. That makes the classes fun,” said Jeffrey.

Jeffrey is a member of two 4-H Clubs.  The 4-H Pioneers Club is a community service club, which performs activities such as mowing yards, replacing worn flags and participating in annual flag retirement ceremonies.  He is also a member of the Cleburne County 4-H Shooting Sports Club, winning first at the state 4-H range events in 2019 and seventh in the nation in muzzleloader at the National 4-H Championships in Grand Island, Nebraska. Jeffrey also participates in NRA shooting sports competitions. In 2019, he received second place overall at both the state and regional Youth Hunter Education Challenge (YHEC) competition and in 2020, he won first place at both state and regional YHEC competitions.

When he is not busy with his college assignments, working at Pizza Plus in Pangburn or working on the family farm, Jeffrey can often be seen around town helping others. “My cowboy hat and little green car are hard to miss,” said Jeffrey.

Jeffrey likes to hunt, fish and work. “I have hunted since I was six. I also enjoy mowing lawns because it gives me something to do and time to think,” he said. Jeffrey also enjoys spending time with his family, blue tick hound and four horses.

Jeffrey said he chose to attend college on the Heber Springs campus because it was close to home and he had heard good things about the college. “Getting an associate degree will help me prepare for the next step in my life.”

“The greatest inspiration has been my friends, family, and the people around me who believe in me when I do not believe in myself. Knowing there are people who back me up in good and hard times helps me continue toward my goals,” said Jeffrey.

Jeffrey offered advice to other students: “Keep trying no matter what is going on. Fight through the hard times to reach the good times. Also, be careful not to overload your class schedule. I recently found a quote that I really like: "If a thing is worth doing, it is worth doing well. If it is worth having, it is worth waiting for. If it is worth attaining, it is worth fighting for. If it is worth experiencing, it is worth putting aside time for." -Oscar Wilde
