“Life as a Vanguard” Introduces Amber Break
Posted Date: 4/12/21

Amber Break, a nursing major, said: “I chose ASU-Beebe because it has a great nursing program, not to mention amazing instructors who are inspirational,” said Amber.

Originally from Bossier City, LA, she is the oldest of five daughters, with parents who are both retired from the Air Force. “Growing up in a house full of girls made life interesting to say the least,” Amber said. She now lives in Searcy, where she is a busy mother to three children, Sadie Lee, Brodie, and Paislee. “I really enjoy watching my kids play sports. To me, they are better than professional athletes.” Also, adding to her busy schedule, Amber serves as a tutor for the nursing program.

Amber said she particularly likes the nursing clinicals because it simulates more closely the day to day experience of the nurse. “There are times I question everything, but then you have those days where it all comes together again. Being able to make a sick person smile and want to get better, well that’s everything.”

“I would love to be an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse for family practice, but as I go through clinicals I find other specialties catching my attention,” said Amber.

When asked about what has guided her in her education journey, Amber said: “My instructors are there for us with an open door all of the time, which is pretty helpful when you’re feeling like you can’t do it anymore. But my reason to keep going are my children. When I feel like giving up I stop, pray and I remember they are watching me. And I love crafting and making things, it really centers me.”

Amber offered advice to other students: “Follow your dreams by leading yourself. Never fall into the ‘everyone else is doing it’ category. When you feel like you cannot do it anymore, try harder. And when you question why you’re going to school, sit down, get a piece of paper and write it down – then, follow your dreams, and go for it.” She added a favorite quote by Colin Powell: “There are no secrets to success. It is a result of preparation, hard work, and learning from failure.”
