Arkansas State University-Beebe and First Community Bank will present a free screening of “My Indiana Muse,” an award-winning documentary about artist Robert Townsend, at 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 1, in the Owen Center Theater, located at 1102 West College Street on the Beebe campus.
Following the screening, Townsend will take the stage at 7 p.m. for a special lecture exploring the inspiration behind his work, his artistic process, and the remarkable story that brought “My Indiana Muse” to life.
For more than 20 years, Townsend has brought the landscapes and imagery of midcentury America to life through remarkably detailed paintings. From vintage matchbooks and candy wrappers to classic automobiles, roadside attractions and historic buildings, his work transports viewers to another place and time.
The documentary follows Townsend as he discovers an unexpected source of inspiration: a woman named Helen, whose image he first encountered in a collection of vintage photographic slides.
Captivated by Helen’s personality and adventures, Townsend begins an ambitious artistic journey spanning more than a decade. As he recreates moments from her life through his paintings, he visits places she traveled to and connects with people who knew her. Along the way, the film reveals the extraordinary beauty found within seemingly ordinary lives.
“This event gives our students and community an opportunity to experience the powerful connection between art and storytelling,” said Ryan Gibbons, coordinator of visual and performing arts at ASU-Beebe. “Robert Townsend’s work reminds us that inspiration can be found in unexpected places and that an ordinary life can hold an extraordinary story.”
Directed and produced by Ric and Jen Serena of Serena Creative, the 43-minute documentary has received numerous honors, including audience and jury awards at film festivals across the country.
The documentary screening and Townsend’s lecture are free and open to the public. No ticket is required.
