Community Education Classes

Dr. Blake Perkins, a college professor and award-winning Arkansas historian, will take us back in time to learn about the people who settled the Ozarks. Included in the class is a free copy of historian Brooks Blevins' book A History of the Ozarks, Volume 1: The Old Ozarks - and the first 10 people who sign up for the class will receive copies signed by the author!

Participants in this Valentine's themed class will learn to flood, decorate, sprinkle and design their own cookies. You'll receive three pre-baked cookies, along with tips and tricks for making dough and baking the prettiest cookies around. This class is led by Tyler Cathy, owner of the Wedding Ford House Bakery in Heber Springs.

With the AARP Safe Driving Course, you could be eligible for a multi-year discount on your auto insurance. The course, taught by Dennis Devine and Clay McCastlain, teaches proven driving techniques to help keep you and your loved ones safe on the road.

Your child will have a blast making a heart suncatcher, doing a science project and playing a fun Valentine's themed game. All kids' events are led by Emily Harris, instructor of education at ASU-Beebe Heber Springs. Each class is limited to 15 children.

Dive into the fascinating world of programming with this interactive and engaging course designed specifically for beginners. By utilizing Scratch, a block-based visual programming language, we offer participants a hands-on and intuitive approach to understanding core programming concepts. This course is taught by Kellie Dieutto, instructor of computer systems and network technology.

Our ServSafe Manager: Test-Prep is available for those interested in preparing for the ServSafe certification. This class provides information on program rules and regulations, including personal hygiene, facility cleanliness, work area sanitation and food preparation safety, complimented by a well-done discussion on food-borne microorganisms and allergens. We include a textbook and one test in the registration cost, so that you have the opportunity to earn the Food Protection Manager Certificate.

The number one cause of preventable death after injury is bleeding. This course teaches you three quick actions that can save a life, and is taught by a member of the Stop the Bleed Foundation. Every participant in this course will receive a certificate upon completion.

Release your creative side during this class while following along to Dan Ingram, a guided painting instructor. Supplies are included and participants will go home with their own masterpiece. Wear clothes suitable for painting. Class is limited to 12 students.

Join us for a shamrockin' good time at our St. Patrick's Day trivia night. Test your knowledge of Irish history, culture and traditions with friends and family. Special agents from the FBI Little Rock field office will provide a presentation covering the most prevalent cyber threats, mass marketing frauds and internet scams plaguing Arkansans. This presentation will include best practices on how to identify these threats, frauds and schemes, as well as how to avoid falling victim and how to report these crimes. A Q&A session will follow.

This introduction class is led by staff at Arkansas State Archives and is geared toward beginners but is available for eveyone to attend. Participants will learn how to utilize the use of census records, birth and death certificates, digital newspaper research and a number of other resources.

Time: 1 to 4 p.m.
Where: ASU-Beebe, Searcy campus
Cost: Free
Each participant will create and paint their own coffee mug during this three-week course. Weeks one and two will include creating the mug, while week three will include receiving your mug and enjoying coffee and conversation. Joanna Smith, owner of Pottery by Joanna, will teach this course and fire each project in her studio.
