Upward Bound

 About Upward Bound

Upward Bound is a college preparation and access program for eligible high school students in grades 9-12. Funded through grants from the U.S. Department of Education, the Arkansas State University-Beebe Upward Bound programs provide an array of academic and support services designed to prepare students for entry into higher education and successful completion of a college degree. Our program involves:

16 Saturday Academies

  • Tutoring
  • ACT test Prep
  • Life skills


A 6 week summer program

  • 5 weeks living on Campus at ASUB taking classes
  • A week cultural/educational trip out of state
  • Various Cultural trips
  • College Visits
  • Social Engagement

To Qualify

Must be a high school freshman, sophomore, or junior (9th, 10th, or 11th grader).
Must be a U.S. citizen or have permanent resident status.
Must meet at least one of the two criteria below:
Be a potential first-generation college student. A first-generation college student is one whose parents or legal guardians, with whom the student currently lives, have not earned a four-year college degree.

OR

Meet federal income guidelines. The guidelines look at both the “taxable income” (Line 40 on the IRS 1040, on line 6 of the 1040EZ, on line 27 of the 1040A form) of the parent/guardian that the student currently lives with, and the number of people in the household (see current income guidelines here). Any student applicant that is currently in foster care is automatically income eligible.

Must have a desire to attend and graduate from a two or four-year college or university.
Must show the willingness to make a long-term commitment to the program. Students are expected to participate fully and remain involved until graduation from high school.
Must be currently enrolled in or have completed Algebra I.
Must be able to secure transportation to all required Upward Bound events and the Summer Academy.
(Travel assistance is provided from Shirley, England, and Lonoke.)

Take college classes while still in high school

Concurrent Enrollment

Concurrent enrollment enables students to get a jump on their degree path by gaining college credits while still in high school.

Regional Career Center

Courses taken at the Regional Career Center are full academic credit through your high school. Students are also eligible to receive concurrent college credit for most of our programs.

The ASU-Beebe Adult Education Centers offer Official GED® Testing on the Searcy campus. 

Services Offered

ASUB Adult Ed offers a variety of services and trainings to better prepare the community for the workforce.

Workforce Education

These short-term classes are usually offered at night, weekends, or online and are designed to enhance personal or professional skills. 

Community Education

The Continuing Education/Workforce Development Department at ASU-Beebe sponsors numerous non-credit classes that are designed to meet the needs of the general public and business workforce.

Advanced Programs

Through a partnership between A-State and ASUB, students may earn baccalaureate degrees from Arkansas State University by taking coursework at the Degree Center on the Beebe campus.
