Program Information
The Patient Care Technology program will introduce students to curricula in Nursing Assistant, EKG/Telemetry, Phlebotomy, Emergency Medicine, and Medical Terminology. The program includes face-to-face and online instruction as well as a variety of lab activities for the critical hands-on learning. Students who complete the program will be eligible to test and receive a national certification in Patient Care Technology making them much more employable as Patient Care Technicians (PCTs). Students who wish to pursue further study may do so with credits earned.
What do Patient Care Technicians do?
PCTs support nurses, doctors, and other medical staff in caring for patients with physical and mental health concerns. They are employed in a wide range of healthcare settings, including hospitals, nursing homes, long-term care facilities, assisted living communities and more. Under the supervision of nursing staff and a larger care team, Patient Care Technicians directly support patients during hospital stays and medical visits. PCTs hold a wide range of responsibilities, including:
- Provide quality patient emotional support and guidance
- Obtain specimens, conduct tests and record results
- Check blood pressure, heart rate and pulse
- Monitor patient condition and provide updates to care team
- Escort patients to X-ray and other diagnostic imaging processes
Certification
Upon successful completion of the Patient Care Technician Certificate of Proficiency (14 credit hours), students will be eligible to sit for national PCT certification exams. Students may also qualify to sit for state CNA licensure exams. Check with your academic advisor for details on what certification exams you will be eligible for.
