Born in Little Rock, Alexus Dupree grew up in Jacksonville and attended Jacksonville Lighthouse Charter School. She initially applied to Arkansas State University-Beebe and other colleges while in high school and decided to attend ASU-Beebe because it was near to where she lived and was an affordable option.
Alexus is pursuing an Associate of Science in Liberal Arts and Sciences, and plans to transfer to the University of Central Arkansas for a bachelor’s degree in business with a minor in photography.
Alexus was first introduced to photography through film class in high school and really enjoyed the field. She was apprehensive to take photography in her first semester at ASU-Beebe because she lacked the technical experience. She has since learned that she enjoys taking candid photos, but dislikes portrait shots. Alexus prefers photos with raw energy and emotions, saying “Everything is not staged until you stage it in a candid photo.” Her work with an image scanner was published on the front cover of the current Volume 2 of the ASU-Beebe literary arts magazine Uncharted.
Another class Alexus said she enjoys is ceramics. “You need something to get your mind off of lectures. When you’re beating clay it’s the perfect therapy session,” said Alexus. With a full course load, Alexus said she enjoys the therapeutic exercise of making pottery. She also appreciates drawing; however, she said she has a love/hate relationship with it because it’s very difficult to draw precise proportions.
Alexus believes in the saying “do what makes you happy” but keeps a realistic view of life by adding “but make sure it’s livable so you can afford to support yourself.” A motto that keeps her focus on graduation: “I like to prove points. My point is that I can finish college.” Her determination is an essential characteristic of her personality. Alexus advises students to “Take into consideration how many hours you can put into classes per semester, and pace yourself so that you are not overwhelmed.”
