ASU-Beebe “Life as a Vanguard” series introduces David Dunavant, adjunct instructor.
Adjunct instructor of music David E Dunavant lives in Little Rock with his wife of 14 years and their two children, ages six and four. He has taught guitar for ASU-Beebe the past 14 years.
Dunavant attended high school at Pulaski Academy and completed undergraduate work at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock and graduate school at Bowling Green State University, earning bachelor’s and master’s degrees in music, with an emphasis in jazz guitar.
At ASU-Beebe, Dunavant teaches all courses of Applied Guitar I, II, III, and IV during the fall and spring semesters. “I really enjoy teaching the guitar,” said Dunavant. “Students take guitar for various reasons. Many students just need the one-hour course credit to satisfy an elective, some are music majors and then others may just want to learn guitar for personal interest.”
Over the years, Dunavant has also taught guitar at Little Rock Music Academy, the University of Arkansas Pulaski Technical College, UALR and Bowling Green State University.
“Since guitar instruction is one-on-one, the curriculum can be slightly adapted toward the student’s interest, experience level, and individual learning style,” said Dunavant. “I enjoy this flexibility in instruction and feel this results in success for the student as they don’t feel pressured to learn a rigid curriculum and can really enjoy the learning experience.”
Dunavant said many of his former students continue to play the guitar beyond the class instruction. “This is the best outcome for any music instruction, that the student continues to use what they learned and enjoy music for a lifetime.”
In offering advice to students, Dunavant said: “The most important thing to remember is that you're here for a reason: to learn and to get your degree. Set yourself up for those goals by working hard, following directions, and taking on more responsibility for your own education. Take advantage of the services and opportunities available at ASU-Beebe in achieving your education goals.”
