Student Receives First Place at Conference
Published: May 06 2014

Shawn Crenshaw of Austin, recently received first place in the state Phi Beta Lambda (PBL) Leadership Conference.  Crenshaw is a sophomore at Arkansas State University-Beebe, pursuing an associate degree in business with an emphasis in accounting.

At the conference, Crenshaw competed in the job interview category. She submitted an application, cover letter, and resume. During two rounds of judging, Crenshaw answered a series of questions regarding her education, career plans, work experience and why she would be a good candidate for the job. In the final round, she was also judged on appearance, materials submitted and the overall presentation.

“The business classes taught me the fundamentals of accounting and economics,” stated Crenshaw.  “Business communications was a very important class for this competition. It showed me the correct way to write a resume and cover letter, how to present myself in an interview, some types of questions that could be asked in an interview, and so much more.”

Crenshaw attributed her success at the competition to encouragement and assistance from her business instructors and PBL advisors. “I believe that good interview skills are essential to any job application process. If you don’t have the correct skills, then you will not make a good first impression and are less likely to get the job,” stated Crenshaw.

Crenshaw will join other students from across the nation at the National PBL Leadership Conference, June 24-27 in Nashville, TN.
