Arkansas State University-Searcy will host an Open House Nov. 1 celebrating 10 years as a campus of Arkansas State University-Beebe.
The Open House will be held between 1 and 6 p.m. in the Main Building Multipurpose Room on Friday, Nov. 1.
Formerly Foothills Vocational Technical School, ASU-Searcy opened in 1966 with 17 employees, and was later renamed Foothills Technical Institute. The focus, at that time, was to teach students a trade to immediately enter the workforce. Some of the first programs offered were practical nursing, welding, auto mechanics, office occupations, farm and diesel equipment, machine shop, and drafting.
Following the merger with ASU-Beebe in 2003, Foothills Technical Institute was renamed ASU-Searcy, and opened additional educational opportunities for students. ASU-Searcy now employs 69 people full time and 15 part-time personnel, and serves a range of students from high school through the Regional Career Center or Concurrent Classes to non-traditional students earning certificates, or technical or associate degrees.
Today, ASU-Searcy offers certificates of proficiency and technical certification in various fields, such as air conditioning, auto body repair, automotive technology, computerized machining, diesel technology, EMT-Paramedics, health information assistant, office occupations, power sports, practical nursing, and welding technology.
With the focus on technical and occupational programs, students can complete most of the programs in about one year and earn a technical certificate. These credits will also apply to the Associate of Applied Science in General Technology degree for those who want to continue their education after the technical certificate.
Since the merger, ASU-Searcy has experienced a 46 percent enrollment increase. This growth allowed ASU-Searcy to expand its programs and buildings over the past 10 years.ASU-Searcy renovated the front of the Main Building, three buildings that house the technology programs, the student services complex, and the campus bookstore, as well as add four new campus buildings.
Open to the public, the Open House will highlight the growth and unity with ASU-Beebe in the last 10 years.
ASU-Searcy is located at 1800 East Moore Avenue. For more details, call (501) 207-6200, or view the website at www.asub.edu.
