Thomas Fernandez is a native Arkansan raised by three women from three generations. He lives outnumbered now, 4:1, with his wife, daughter, mother, and great aunt. His hobbies are working in the yard with his wife, spending time in nature, cooking and reading. He prefers drawing someone in life rather than using a photograph, but always has a hard time finding someone to sit for him. He would gladly give up chocolate over cheese.
Drawing, for him, has always been a way to share the love of his family with others and explore his imagination. His influences number greatly from illustration, Caravaggio, and Francis Bacon. He’ll tell you that snapshots are merely quicker sketches, but will always prefer to draw it out. His goal as an artist is to better understand the nature of the portrait as an object and as an experience. His goal as an educator is to help students learn from failure as well as understand how to push themselves past failure. His biggest wish for students is that they draw every day.
