Satisfactory Progress
Policy for Satisfactory Academic Progress
Students who have applied for federal financial aid funds are required to make satisfactory academic progress (SAP) in order to receive those funds. As per required federal regulations quality and quantity of work are considered in determining SAP. Satisfactory Academic Progress is defined as passing a required number of hours and achieving a required Grade Point Average during any semester or academic year. Academic progress will be reviewed after each term during which a student receives aid. Students may receive financial aid while enrolled for a full-time course of study or for a part-time course of study. However, all full-time students must be enrolled in at least twelve (12) hours each semester. Students must complete requirements for an associate degree or certificate within 150% of the published length of the program. The following chart outlines basic program requirements.
Minimum Progress Standards
| Semester | Required Cumulative CREDIT Hours | Required Cumulative GPA |
| 1* | ||
| 2 | 13 | 1.50 |
| 3 | 22 | 1.75 |
| 4 | 34 | 2.00 |
| 5 | 47 | 2.00 |
| 6 | 62 | 2.00 |
*All students, including part-time, must be admitted and enrolled in a degree or certificate granting program, and must complete a minimum number of hours of all attempted course work each semester, as well as maintain the required GPA.
Requirements:
Full-time (12 or more hours)
Must complete 8 hours per semester (including remedial course work)
¾ time (9 – 11 hours)
Must complete 6 hours per semester (including remedial course work)
½ time (6 – 8 hours)
Must complete 3 hours per semester (including remedial course work)
Less than ½ time (5 or less hours)
All hours attempted (including remedial course work)
A student may be paid financial aid for a maximum of 150% of the published length of the program (for example 93 hours for an A.A. degree, 98 hours for an A.S. degree, 45 to 74 hours for a Technical Certificate depending on the program) or attainment of an Associate Degree or Technical Certificate, whichever occurs first. Students may apply for a waiver to pursue a second degree or certificate.
Students who fail to complete the semester or receive grades of all Fs are not eligible to receive financial aid. Students who fail to meet the above requirements, but complete coursework for the term will be placed on Financial Aid Probation for one semester. If SAP requirements are not met after the probationary semester, the student
will not be eligible for any type of Federal assistance until he/she meets Minimum Progress Standards.
To re-establish financial aid eligibility, students must complete one (1) regular semester or two (2) summer sessions at their own expense, enroll in the same status when they lost eligibility, and upon completion of the semester, meet the minimum semester hours and GPA for their enrollment status: Full-time, ¾ time or ½ time. Staying out of school a semester
will not change eligibility status.
The above policy applies to all initial, transfer, continuing and re-entering students.
Satisfactory Progress Policy Appeal Procedures
You must complete an appeal cover page (pdf) with your letter.
-
All students with extenuating circumstances may appeal ASU-Beebe’s Satisfactory Academic Progress Policy. The appeal will be reviewed and a decision made by the Appeal Committee. Examples of extenuating circumstances are prolonged illness under a doctor’s care, illness/accident requiring hospitalization or prolonged absence from class, prolonged illness of a dependent with proper documentation, or death of an immediate family member.
-
Appeals must be in writing from the student and must be accompanied by documentation, if necessary.
-
Students using summer grades and hours earned to appeal for aid reinstatement must submit a written appeal indicating a request that summer statistics be checked by this office for appeal processing.
-
Students will be notified in writing as to the outcome of their appeal.
-
The decision of the Appeal Committee is final.
Satisfactory Progress Policy Special Conditions
-
Remedial or Developmental Courses – Enrollment in these courses will be considered in the total hour requirement for calculating financial aid awards; however, remedial or developmental course hours will not count toward cumulative credit hours in meeting satisfactory progress standards.
-
“I” Grades (Incomplete) – Calculated as failing grades until the course has been satisfactorily completed according to provisions in the University catalog.
-
Withdrawals – Students are responsible for completion of courses for which they are registered. Failure to complete courses is viewed as unsatisfactory progress and will require repayment of financial aid if less than 60% of the term is completed.
-
Repeating Courses – Students repeating courses must have these courses recalculated for completion of required hours and grade point average and in cumulative hours pursued. Financial aid will not be awarded for repeated courses previously passed with a grade of C or better.
-
Transfer Students – Transfer students are required to meet ASU-Beebe Academic Progress standards. All previous hours pursued will be considered in establishing total remaining eligibility for these students.
-
Satisfactory Academic Progress is required of all financial aid applicants at ASU-Beebe, including those applicants who not previously participated in federal aid programs.
