Technical Certificate in Health Information Assistant

The field of medical records is growing rapidly. The Health Information Assistant program provides students with knowledge of the duties and responsibilities of health care managers. Through the use of textbooks, applications, and simulations, students are given the opportunity to develop the skills required for this field. These skills include International Classification and Diseases (ICD) 10 Clinical Modification (CM) and Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) coding, insurance billing, records management, HIPAA regulations, and office management.

Students will have three (3) years from the date of enrollment to complete all requirements of the program. A student re-entering after the three-year time period will have to repeat all the Health Information Assistant (HIA) courses in the program.

First Semester:

  • COM 1003 Career Communications

    OR

    ENG 1003 Freshman English I

  • MATH 1013 Technical Mathematics M (or higher)

  • HIA 1103 Medical Terminology I

  • HIA 1203 Body Structure and Function

  • HIA 1303 Medical Office Procedure

  • HIA 1603 CPT Coding

Second Semester:

  • HIA 2103 Advanced Medical Terminology

  • HIA 2203 Medical Office Applications

  • HIA 2303 ICD 10 CM Coding

  • HIA 2313 Disease Processes of the Human Body

  • HIA 2503 Internship/OJT

Total for Technical Certificate = 33 Credit Hours

Certificate of Proficiency in Health Information Assistant

Requirements:

  • HIA 1103 Medical Terminology I

  • HIA 1203 Body Structure and Function

  • HIA 1303 Medical Office Procedure

Total for Technical Certificate = 9 Credit Hours

* Courses are all taken on the ASU-Beebe Searcy campus.
