Early Childhood Education (Daycare)

The Early Childhood Education (Daycare) program  is designed to provide students exposure to practical application as it relates to the development of children from conception to age 8. In addition, students will grain a broad understanding of the state and federal laws pertaining to child care and education, and the laws and accommodations related to special needs children.

Degrees and Certificates

Associate of Applied Science Early Childhood Education Daycare

*Clinical hours will meet or exceed the hours required for a CDA (Child Development Associate) certification.  

The AASECE degree requires 60 hours of classes, including: 

University Requirements-1 OR 3 hours

  • UNIV 1001 Principles of Academic Success I 
  • UNIV 1003 Principles of Academic Success III

The 3-hour credit course is required for students who must take at least one remedial course.  Students who are not required to take a remedial course may take the 3-hour credit course.  In both situations, the courses (1-hour or 3-hour count toward electives. 

English -6 hours

  • ENG 1003 Freshman English I
  • ENG 1013 Freshman English II

Lab Science- 4 hours

  • BIOL 1004 Biology for General Education

Mathematics - 3 hours

  • MATH 1013 Technical Math (or higher)
  • PSY 2013 Introduction to Psychology

Speech/Fine Arts/Humanities-3 hours (Choose one from the following):

  • SPCH 1203 Oral Communication
  • ART 2503 Fine Arts-Visual
  • MUS 2503 Fine Arts- Musical 
  • THEA 2503 Fine Arts- Theatre
  • THEA 2513 Fine Arts- Film

Physical Education- 2 hours (Choose one of the options below):

  • PE 1623 Concepts of Fitness OR Two 1-hour activity courses or one 2-hour activity course

Certificate of Proficiency Daycare

*The CDA classes are internet assist courses completed in one semester by meeting one night per week to cover all coursework for the 10 hours below.

The Certificate of Proficiency requires 10 hours of classes including:

  • ECH 1113 Foundations of Early Childhood Education (Methods/Materials)
  • ECH 2203 Exceptional Children
  • ECH 1301 Practicum I

Advanced Programs

Through a partnership between A-State and ASUB, students may earn baccalaureate degrees from Arkansas State University by taking coursework at the Degree Center on the Beebe campus.
