Crime Prevention Tips

When at Home...

  • Leave any valuables, particularly jewelry, at home if it is not necessary to have them with you.

  • Keep your doors locked, even when you're at home. It's easy for others to enter your residence without you knowing, particularly if you're in a backroom or if your stereo or television is playing.

  • Keep balcony doors and windows in upper floors locked. A screen door is not a security device. It is not uncommon for a burglar to climb to upper floors of residence and enter.

  • Record the make, model, and serial numbers of all your valuables and keep them in a safe place.

  • Engrave your property with your social security or driver's license number. Photograph items that cannot be engraved.

  • If solicited by telephone, do not give out credit card numbers or personal information not listed in the telephone directory.

  • While out shopping, lock your valuables in the trunk if possible, if you must continue to shop. Carry your purse or handbag close to your body, with the flap turned towards you.

  • If you have access to a cellular telephone, carry or take it with you.

  • Try to use automated teller machines in the daytime. Don't approach if you're uneasy about anyone nearby.

  • Park in well-lighted areas close to foot traffic, if possible. Lock all doors and roll up windows when exiting your car, and again when entering.

  • Law Enforcement officers can't be everywhere at once, but you and your neighbors can. Start a neighborhood crime watch and USE it.
When Walking or Jogging...

  • Never walk or jog alone, try to get a with a friend, if possible, to go with you.

  • If your followed, cross the street.

  • Vary your pace.

  • Change directions, or go into a business if possible, and notify the police.

  • Stick to well-lighted, well traveled areas. Avoid shortcuts through wooded areas or parking lots.

  • Walk facing traffic whenever possible. This increases awareness of potential hazards and also reduces the possibility of being followed by someone in a vehicle.

  • Walk with friends to school, it's fun and much safer in case of trouble.

  • Lock your bicycle while at school or when you have to leave it.

  • Walk as far from the curb as possible, in case someone should try to pull you into a car.
